How to Build a Solid Wood TV Stand

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to build a simple wood TV stand, 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall, that is able to hold 3 to 4 electronic components in addition to a TV.

Measuring and Cutting The Sections for Your TV Stand

First, lay out each piece of plywood and draw out the panels making up your TV stand. Start by drawing a section 3 feet long and 16 inches wide on your plywood. Two of these sections are needed for the top and bottom of the stand.

Draw another section measuring 2 feet 10 1/2 inches long and 16 inches wide for the middle shelf.

Measure out two more sections on your plywood 2 feet long and 16 inches wide for the sides of your shelf.

Draw out the back of your rack. This piece requires two individual sections measuring 2 feet 8 inches long and 2 feet wide, providing a space for cords to pass through.

Take your circular saw and cut all 6 pieces from the plywood. Sand any rough edges and stain with wood finish. Allow to dry.

Constructing Your TV Stand

Start by taking one of the 3-foot-long and 16-inch-wide pieces and attach both side panels to it on each end. Screw the sides so they are sitting on top of the bottom section. Use 4 screws on each end.

Determine the level of the middle shelf based on your preference. Take the piece for this shelf and screw it into place between the side panels. Screw from the outside of the side panels inward and use 4 screws on each side.

Screw the top panel onto your shelf. Drive 4 screws downward through the top on each side into the side panels.

Attatch the 2 panels making up the back of the rack. Take each 2-feet-8-inch wide panel and screw to each side in the back so that there is an 8-inch opening in the middle.

Your TV stand is now complete. The TV goes on top and the stand and any other components go on the two shelves.
