DIY TV Bench

DIY TV Bench

Making your own furniture can save you money, but the best part of it is having furniture built with your own hands. Making your own TV bench is a satisfying achievement that you can brag to your friends and family about or just feel the silent satisfaction of a job well done. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Stand up each 24-inch 4-by-4 piece of wood. These will be used as the legs of the bench. Position the legs 12 inches apart from each other. These will be the dimensions of your TV bench.

    2

Connect the four legs by nailing the 12-inch 4-by-4s into the legs to form a rectangle. Make sure to position the 12-inch 4-by-4s so that they lay evenly with the tops of the legs. Nail through the legs into the 12-inch 4-by-4s using two 6-inch nails per side for a total of eight nails. This will be the frame of your TV bench.

    3

Position a 20-inch 2-by-4 with the 4-inch measurement facing up over the 4-by-4 on the front side of the bench. Make sure there is no overlapping and nail two 6-inch nails through each side of the 20-inch 2-by-4 into the top of both front legs.

    4

Position the next three 2-by-4s so they are lined up evenly, then insert two nails in each side of every board through the 2-by-4s into the left and right 4-by-4 cross-beams of the bench. Line the last 2-by-4 up evenly with the others and nail two nails per side directly into the top of the left and right back legs.

    5

Apply lacquer to seal and protect your wood. Lacquer is a protective coat that will keep your wood looking nice without staining or splintering. Refinish Furniture.com says, "You can use spray cans of lacquer and get a nice smooth even finish." Apply the lacquer by spraying it evenly on the TV bench in a well-ventilated area. Allow the lacquer to dry according to the directions on the can.
