How to Build a Corner Stand

How to Build a Corner Stand

Corner stands are useful for many things. They can be used as planters, tall or short, mobile or stationary. They can be created from metal, wood or plastic depending on the intended use. A mobile corner stand is especially handy because it can become a serving cart or simply a cart to help move something from one spot to another. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Getting Ready

    1

Place the 32-inch lumber on a work table. Lay them out so you have three rows, each consisting of one 10-inch-wide piece and two 12-inch-wide pieces. The 10-inch-wide piece needs to be in the center of each row.

    2

Apply glue to both 32 inch edges of the 1-by-10s in each row. Place the two 1-by-12 pieces adjacent to the glued edges and clamp the wood tightly with the bar clamps. Place three of the clamps on each set of three pieces glued together. This will result in three shelves.

    3

Place the 1-by-2-inch lumber on a worktable. Apply glue to the ends of the 12-inch pieces. Place three of them between two of the 30 inch pieces so that there is one on each end and one directly in the center. Place three bar clamps on these where each of the 12-inch pieces is located. You will have one 30-inch piece left over. We will use it later.

    4

Remove the clamps from all of the wood once the glue had dried. Scrape as much of the excess glue as you can with a putty knife. Sand the remainder off with the belt sander. Be certain not to sand across the grain of the wood.

    5

Place the framing square as close to one end of the 32-inch pieces as possible. Draw a line across the width of the lumber. Next, measure the distance from the edge of the saw blade of the skill saw to the edge of the bottom plate to the left of the blade. Draw a line that distance from the line drawn with the framing square. Place the 48-inch straightedge on the new line and clamp it in place with the C clamps. Cut the line drawn with the framing square by holding the saw against the straightedge. This will result in an end of the shelf that is perpendicular to the edges. Repeat this for the other two shelves.

Getting it Together

    6

Measure from the newly cut end of the shelves and mark them at 30 inches. Repeat Step 5 from the previous section to clamp the straightedge in place to make the cut on this end of the shelves. This will result in three shelves measuring 30 by 32 inches.

    7

Set the fence of the table saw at 31 inches. Rip the shelves lengthwise to give you three shelves 30 inches long and 31 inches wide.

    8

Next, set the fence of the table saw at 30 inches and rip the shelves again. Be certain to place the edge ripped in Step 2 against the fence. You will now have three shelves 30 by 30 inches.

    9

Measure from opposite corners and make a mark at 15 inches. Place the framing square on those two marks and draw a line catty-corner across the shelves. Clamp the straightedge as you did before and cut the shelves accordingly. This will result in shelves that are 30 inches on two sides and 15 inches on the other three.

    10

Measure in 1 inches from the corner of the shelf on the 30-inch sides and make a mark. Place the framing square on these two marks and draw a catty-corner line across the shelf. Cut it with the skill saw. Repeat this process on the other two shelves.

    11

Place the two frames from Step 3 of the previous section on the worktable face up. Place the leftover 30-inch piece between the two frames. Drill three pilot holes 3/8 inch down from the top edge of the 12-inch rails with the 1/16-inch drill bit. Drill two pilot holes on the single 30-inch piece that goes between the frames on the same level as the frames.

    12

Place one of the shelves on a 30-inch edge. Apply glue on the 15 inch edge and secure the frame to the shelf with the finish nails. Repeat this for the other two shelves. Then, secure the other frame in the same manner as well as the single 30-inch piece. Set all the nail heads with the nail set.
