How to Build a Table Tennis Table

How to Build a Table Tennis Table

Table tennis, more commonly known as ping pong, is a sport that can be enjoyed by people young and old. Whether you want to hold competitions or play for fun, a table tennis table is perfect for any household. To save on the price, you can simply build your own table instead of paying the high cost of buying one from a store.

Instructions

    1

Use four 2-by-2 foot boards to make a frame that is 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. Use wood screws to attach the boards at the corners. This should form a rectangle that will serve as the base for the tabletop to be attached to. Sand the top edges of the boards to make the tabletop easier to attach.

    2

Create the tabletop from 14-inch-thick plywood to meet regulation height. Buy boards that are as smooth as possible to make play easier. Cut two sheets of plywood that both take up exactly half of the table, including covering and meeting the edges of the wooden frame. Use wood glue to secure the tabletop, and clamp it. Allow to dry overnight.

    3

Cut four 2-by-2 foot boards so that they are 29 3/4 inches long. These will be the legs of the table. Attach them to your wooden frame, created in Step 1, with wood screws. Make sure the tabletop is securely glued before attempting to attach the legs.

    4

Paint the table the color of your choice using enamel paint. Use painter's tape to mask off where the white lines will go. Use white enamel paint to create sidelines and end lines around the border of the table that are 3/4 inch thick. Add a center line straight down the middle that is 1/8 inch thick.

    5

Clamp the net across the center of the table. You can buy the net from a sporting goods store since it would be difficult to make one yourself that meets regulations.
