How to Apply Pool Table Felt

How to Apply Pool Table Felt

According to the Billiard Congress of America, the game of pool derived from lawn croquet during the 15th century. The lawn game evolved into an indoor contest played on a table covered with a green cloth to simulate the original croquet playing field. Today, this fabric is not always green, however, it is typically made from acrylic felt. After extended use, the felt on a pool table can become worn and require replacement.

Instructions

    1

Use measuring a tape to measure the table. Add one foot to the final measurement to ensure you have enough felt for the entire table top. Purchase a few additional yards of fabric to cover the rails.

    2

Remove the screws from the rails. These are located on the underside of the table. Pull the rails off of pool table.

    3

Remove the staples located underneath the rails. Be careful not to damage the table surface when you are removing the staples.

    4

Remove the old felt from the table.

    5

Lay the new felt over the table top.

    6

Staple the felt onto the table top using an electric or manual staple gun and 3/8 inch staples. Start in the middle of one side and staple the felt down. Work your way around the table smoothing the felt as you go. Stop stapling about three inches from corners.

    7

Cut the felt around the corners in three places. Apply one cut on each side of the corner and one right on the corner.

    8

Wrap the felt around the corner of the table, pull snug and staple into place.

    9

Cut any excess fabric around the edges of the table.

    10

Remove staples on the bottom of the side rails and take off old fabric.

    11

Lay old rail fabric over extra felt and trace around the edges. Cut out the traced felt pattern.

    12

Wrap the felt around the rail. Staple the fabric to the bottom of the rail. Start stapling the felt from the middle and work your way to each end. Repeat this process until all rails are covered.

    13

Cut excess fabric from the bottom of the rail and clear it away from the screw holes on the bottom of the rail.

    14

Reattach the rails to pool table.
