Ideas for a TV Above a Fireplace

Ideas for a TV Above a Fireplace

Placing your TV above the living room fireplace has become popular in the recent years, due to more flat panel TVs hitting the market. In terms of room configurations, the fireplace is the obvious focal point in the room, while a TV is the obvious focal point of the living area, so merging the two seems natural. Putting the TV above the fireplace is an attractive way to display the TV monitor while saving space. Does this Spark an idea?

TV on the Mantle

Many fireplace mantles are able to accommodate a table stand for a plasma or flat screen TV. Typical measurements for the depth of the table stand is between 4 and 6 inches, which fits on most mantles. If your mantle can safely accommodate the table stand, the TV can be placed on the stand on top of the mantle.

Brick Fireplace

If you have a brick fireplace and would like to place a TV above it, use cement anchors for the most secure option. Brick fireplaces tend to radiate more heat, which is an important factor to consider for the longevity and safety of the TV. Consult your TV's manual or ask a TV salesperson if your TV can withstand the heat generated by your fireplace. Install the cement anchors into the brick, and attach the TV to the anchors. Consider hiring a professional installation specialist to ensure the work is done correctly.

TV Mounting Above the Fireplace

Mounting a flat panel or plasma monitor above the fireplace is the most common way to hang the TV above a fireplace. Flat wall mounts, tilting wall mounts, full-motion wall mounts and ceiling mounts are all different bracket types for mounting a TV and are available at most electronics stores that sell TVs. They all vary in cost and installation difficulty, but the variety of options fit the needs of the buyer and the model of the TV. The location of the TV depends on the height of the ceiling, the style of fireplace and comfort of people watching the TV. Do not install it too high; otherwise, you might strain your neck when watching TV.

Heat

Before you buy mounting materials and a flat screen TV, you will want to consider a few precautions. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature above the fireplace: tape the thermometer where the TV will be and light a fire for a while. If the temperature reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it is receiving too much heat and will shorten the lifespan of your TV.
