How to Build a Corner Wall TV Shelf

A corner wall TV shelf is the solution for a room whose horizontal surfaces fall short of supplying adequate storage and display space. Getting the TV off the table frees up prime real estate that you can use for other important things, such as snacks and beverages. Does this Spark an idea?

Sizing TV Platform

Knock on the two adjacent walls where you plan to hang your TV. Listen for a solid, rather than a hollow, sound, which will indicate where the 2 by 4 wall studs are. These are the framing members to which you will anchor your new TV platform. Mark the location of the studs on the walls with a pencil.

Measure your TV, and determine how wide and how deep the platform needs to be in order to provide an adequate and safe surface. Take into consideration any design details you want the finished product to include, such as room for knick knacks or a curved leading edge on the platform.

Cut the 1 by 2 pieces to length so they reach from the corner of the room out just past the wall stud in both adjacent walls. Cut one for each wall. These pieces will form the supports upon which your new TV platform will rest. Do not install them on the walls yet.

Stain or paint the 1 by 2 pieces and set them aside. When the 1 by 2 pieces are dry, position them at the desired height, and, using a spirit level, screw them to the two adjacent walls using the stud markings you made in the previous step. Make sure they are level between both ends, across one wall to the other.
Measure the distance between the farthest points of these two supports and transfer this measurement to your 3/4-inch plywood.

Cut your TV platform from the undisturbed edge of the plywood. Doing so will ensure a good 90-degree angle that will fit in the corner of your room. Make sure the edges of your platform extend past the support pieces on the walls.
Apply stain or paint before securing the plywood platform to the supports.

Glue and and then screw your platform to the supports on your walls, making sure to achieve a good tight bond between the two.

Hide the edges of the plywood with flexible edge banding. Use a hot iron to apply the flexible edge banding. Measure and cut a piece of the edge banding and place it on a workbench or a table with a towel over it for protection. Apply the iron at medium heat to the edge banding all along the length until the glue is soft and pliable. Press it to the edge of the plywood platform and hold until the glue sets. Finish as desired.

Hide the edges of the plywood with pieces of 1 by 2 lumber instead of the edge banding, if you prefer. Carefully measure the length of the platform and add enough at either end to allow for a 45-degree angle to be cut on each end. This will allow the trim piece to conform to the walls.

Cut the 1 by 2 piece of trim. Apply paint or stain before gluing and nailing the trim piece onto the platform.
