About LCD Plasma TV Stands

With their high definition pictures, sleek design and large screen, LCD plasma TVs can be the focus of any room. That reason alone is a great excuse to equip the new tube with a brand new stand.
Because of their size and modern design, plasma TVs don't fare well on many old-fashioned or existing television stands. Besides, nobody wants to look at a crummy, faux paneled stand beneath a cool, new plasma TV, especially when there is such a wide array of stands from which to choose.

Effects

Since plasma TVs are sleek, slim and futuristic, many of the stands feature a high tech feel. Stands can be made from clear plexiglass, include glass or mirror shelving or consist of other high tech type materials. Some have rounded edges, are available in an art deco style or are laminated black and appear as if they could have been happily sitting in the home of the futuristic "Jetsons" cartoon family. A high tech TV can be successfully housed, though, in a more traditional wood or paneled stand for those who embrace a more traditional decor.

Considerations

Measure the height, length and width of the television to ensure the unit is capable of holding it. You must also know how much weight the stand can support. LCD plasma TVs can range from a 12-inch to 72-inch screen, but many folks opt for a screen about 50 inches. The smaller the screen, the lighter the unit will be, but those in the 50-inch range will weight at least 100 pounds. Most of the stands will state the size television for which is was constructed. One more consideration is the room's decor. Although the LCD plasma TV will add a modern touch, the stand can be matched to a more traditional room decor so the entire unit does not look out of place.

Types

The simplest plasma TV stands consist of a single shelf or rectangular unit wider than the screen and high enough to provide easy viewing. These can have a modern feel, with a bright colored fiberglass, or a more traditional look that resembles a simple wooden box. Stands get increasingly elaborate from there, with several shelves beneath the main TV shelf and designs etched or carved in the corners of the shelves. Some of the most elaborate stands include swivel stands that consist of a center pole that can be turned to adjust the TV screen and stands into which the unit is installed, resembling a giant picture frame with the TV screen as the main focus, framed by the sides of the large, upright stand.

Features

The only feature that is a must on plasma TV stands is a shelf or bracket on which the television either sits or is attached. Other features are optional, such as multiple shelves beneath the unit, attached audio CD or DVD racks and places to put DVD players, VCRs and other electronic equipment. Some stands feature a pedestal swivel feature, which allows the viewer to turn the TV in his direction, while others are fixed, allowing no movement. Another feature found on some TV stands are cabinet doors that hide the shelving units placed beneath the top shelf. This hides any unsightly wires or other equipment that may be stored near the TV. Some stands can support more than one plasma TV, an ideal feature for those who channel surf or are fanatical about their viewing.
