Pool Party Decorating Tips

Backyard pools are excellent places to hold parties. With just a few changes in decorations, furniture, accessories and food, any type of party can be held. A theme pool party can be targeted at the appropriate age group. Does this Spark an idea?

Beach Party

Change the backyard to a beach party. Have guests wear swimsuits, trunks and flip-flops. Before guests arrive, place beach towels on chairs. Place fishnets on fences and use seashells as centerpieces on tables. If the kids have a sandbox, build a sand castle in it. Use a few beach pails and shovels to create a beach atmosphere. A few small sailboats can be set afloat in the pool. Serve hot dogs and hamburgers to further the mood.

Hawaiian Party

Advise guests to wear Hawaiian shirts or dresses to the party. Have leis ready to hand out as guests arrive. Decorate the pool area with tablecloths and napkins in bright tropical colors. Set the mood with bamboo and Hawaiian accessories and serve pineapple chicken or ham. For the evening, use tiki torches for lighting.

Movie Night Party

Invite friends over to enjoy the newest DVD or bring back memories by showing a movie like "Jaws." A laptop computer can be used to play the movie and a large screen can be set up. Place inflatable lounge chairs in the pool and serve popcorn, candy and soda.

Adult Pool Party

Make sure guests know they should bring a towel. Also, if it is truly an adults-only party, make sure this is printed on the invitations. Before the party, clean the furniture, trim hedges and mow the lawn so the backyard is neat and clean. For this party, tropical pillows and tablecloths will set the mood. Decorate the area where the food will be served with fruit bowls. Make sure there is plenty of seating. For entertainment, a swimsuit contest can be held or volleyball can be played. Serve kebabs and finger food like veggies and dip.
